Neha Bora Emerges as a Face of India’s Youth Protests
Neha Bora is a student activist who has become a well-known voice at protests in India.
She says she first became interested in politics through theatre and student demonstrations.
Recently, protesters wanted to demonstrate in New Delhi about claims that many voters’ names were removed from electoral lists.
Police stopped them from reaching their planned protest site and detained Bora.
She was released later that day.
While detained, she told supporters to keep protesting.
India’s Election Commission denies favouring any group.
Bora says people are joining protests because they have carried grievances for years and because hope can spread among them.
Neha Bora, a 29-year-old student activist, was detained during protests in New Delhi and released later on Saturday.
From detention, Bora urged demonstrators to continue protesting after police blocked access to Jantar Mantar.
The Cockroach Janta Party-led protests seek the election chief’s removal over alleged voter-data irregularities and the deletion of 130 million names from electoral rolls.
The Election Commission denies favouring any group, while Modi’s party says critics are wrongly challenging legitimate electoral processes.
Bora says theatre and the student-led protests against the citizenship law in 2019 and 2020 shaped her path into activism.
