GMCH Leads Eastern India in Kidney Transplants
The Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Guwahati is doing a lot of kidney transplants.
They have done over 30 in the last seven months and are on track to do the most in eastern India this year.
They are good at doing hard surgeries and even started doing transplants from people who have passed away.
But they still have a problem: not enough people are donating kidneys from deceased donors because of social stigma and misinformation.
This makes the waiting list for transplants very long.
The hospital hopes to fix this by teaching people more about organ donation.
GMCH is on track to perform the highest number of kidney transplants in eastern India this year.
Over 30 kidney transplants have been completed in the past seven months.
GMCH has successfully managed high-risk and complex donor-recipient combinations.
The hospital has performed four cadaveric transplants in 2023, expanding into deceased donor transplantation.
Shortage of deceased donors and social stigma are major challenges for the hospital.
