US-Canada Trade Talks Collapse as Tariff Dispute Escalates

The United States and Canada were trying to make a new trade agreement.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the countries were close to a deal before Canada asked for more concessions.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney gave the opposite explanation.

He said the United States changed the proposed terms at the last minute.

The talks ended without an agreement.

The United States then imposed 50% tariffs on some Canadian goods.

Canada said it would respond with matching tariffs on selected US products.

The Canadian tariffs will begin on September 8.

Both countries now face a deeper trade dispute.
