ATP Introduces New Heat Policy for 2026
The ATP, which organizes men's tennis tournaments, is introducing a new rule to handle very hot and humid weather starting in 2026.
This rule uses a special measurement called WBGT to decide when players need breaks or when matches should be paused.
If the temperature gets too high, players can take a 10-minute break to cool down, drink water, change clothes, or even shower.
If it gets even hotter, the match will be stopped.
This rule is similar to what other sports like soccer and Formula One already do.
The ATP made this decision after several players had to retire from matches because of the extreme heat and humidity, like in Shanghai this year.
ATP will introduce a new heat policy starting in the 2026 season.
The policy is based on the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) index to measure heat stress.
If WBGT reaches 30.1°C or higher, players can request a 10-minute cooling break after the second set.
Play will be suspended if WBGT exceeds 32.2°C.
The rule aims to protect player health and improve conditions for all tournament participants.
