Madras HC Approves Memorial for 1755 War Heroes
The Madras High Court has allowed the building of a memorial stupa to honor the heroes of the 1755 Natham Kanavai War, which was fought against the British.
A lawyer named Siva Kalaimani Ambalam requested this memorial, but it was initially rejected by the local authorities.
The court agreed that such memorials can inspire and motivate people, just like memorials for other historical figures.
The court also compared the importance of celebrating success to India's achievements in chess and the sacrifices made during the freedom struggle.
The judge emphasized that India's freedom movement was a collective effort and that Tamil Nadu played a significant role in it.
The court ruled that no permission is required to erect a memorial on private land, and the petitioner is free to build the stupa.
