WhatsApp Wedding Invitation Scam Uses APK Files to Target Indians
Some scammers send fake wedding invitations on WhatsApp.
Instead of a normal picture or PDF, the message may include an APK file that installs an app on an Android phone.
The message might look like it came from someone you know.
If the app is harmful, it could access information on the phone.
Scammers may try to use that information to interfere with banking or other online services.
Do not install an unexpected APK just because the invitation looks real.
Check with the sender by calling or using another way to contact them.
If you already installed the file, avoid entering banking details on that phone.
Contact your bank if you notice suspicious transactions or activity.
Scammers in India may send WhatsApp messages posing as wedding invitations and containing APK files.
The messages may appear to come from someone the recipient knows and use friendly language to encourage installation.
APK files are used to install apps on Android; files received unexpectedly may not have undergone the checks described for Google Play Store apps.
A harmful APK could access phone data or expose sensitive information, potentially raising the risk of financial fraud.
The article advises verifying invitations through another channel, avoiding unexpected APKs, and contacting a bank if suspicious transactions occur.
