Japan deploys army to combat rising bear attacks and fatalities
Imagine there are way too many bears in Japan, and they are getting very hungry because their usual food is scarce.
Because of this, they are coming out of the mountains more often and getting closer to towns, even entering places like schools and supermarkets.
Some people have been hurt or even died because of these bear encounters.
The government is so concerned that they have sent soldiers to help local people try to catch or manage the bears.
It's like the bears have taken over, and people feel like they are living in a zoo, but without the safety of cages.
Scientists think that warmer weather is helping the bears have more babies, and this is a big reason why there are so many of them now.
Japan's Defense Ministry has deployed troops to Akita Prefecture to help manage a surge in bear attacks.
Since April, 13 people have died and approximately 100 have been injured in encounters with brown and Asiatic black bears.
Bear sightings have become frequent, with animals seen near schools, train stations, and supermarkets.
Experts attribute the rise in attacks to a growing bear population and a poor acorn harvest, leading to hungry bears venturing into populated areas.
Troops are assisting local hunters by setting traps and disposing of deceased bears, but are instructed not to open fire.
