Delhi’s Satya Niketan Student Hub Faces Safety Reckoning

Delhi’s Satya Niketan Student Hub Faces Safety Reckoning

Satya Niketan was once a small residential neighbourhood with a few shops.

Over time, many families changed their homes into paying guest rooms for college students.

This happened because Delhi University’s South Campus attracted many students from outside Delhi.

The area now has rooms, food stalls, brokers, photocopy shops, and other businesses for students.

Some students pay about Rs 8,000 a month for a bed, with food and electricity costing extra.

The buildings became taller and more crowded as owners tried to create more rooms.

On September 6, one five-storey building collapsed and seven people died.

Afterward, officials sealed or demolished some buildings that were considered unsafe.

The tragedy made students and residents worry about whether the neighbourhood’s housing is safe.
