India's Credit Card Spending Hits Record High in September
Imagine people in India use special plastic cards to buy things, like a digital piggy bank.
In September, they used these cards more than ever before, spending a record amount of money – about 2.17 lakh crore rupees!
This is a big jump from last year.
More people are getting these cards, with over 11 crore cards now in use.
Banks, especially private ones, are getting a bigger slice of this spending, though public banks are also growing.
Even though people are spending more with these cards, the total amount they owe on them has grown a bit slower compared to other types of loans.
This record spending is happening because of special deals from banks and people buying more during the holiday season.
India's credit card spending reached an all-time high of Rs 2.17 lakh crore in September, a 23% year-on-year increase.
The total number of outstanding credit cards rose to 11.3 crore in September 2025.
Private sector banks held a dominant 74.2% share of credit card spending, while public sector banks increased their share to 21.2%.
Average spending per card increased for both PVBs (Rs 20,011) and PSBs (Rs 16,927), with PSBs showing a higher percentage growth.
Credit card outstanding balances, while increasing moderately year-on-year to Rs 2.82 lakh crore, saw their share in total retail loans decrease to 4.5%.
