West Bengal Tops India in Child Marriage Rates
In West Bengal, a lot of girls are getting married before they turn 18.
The latest report shows that the state has the highest rate of child marriages in the country.
This is even though the government has programs to help girls and stop child marriage.
About 6 out of every 100 girls in West Bengal get married before 18.
Overall in India, the rate is much lower.
The rate of early marriage is still quite high in rural and urban areas.
Other states like Kerala have much lower rates.
The government is trying to fix this with programs like the Kanyashree Scheme.
West Bengal has the highest percentage of child marriages in India.
6.3% of females in West Bengal marry before age 18.
The national average for child marriage is 2.1%.
Kerala has the lowest rate of child marriage at 0.1%.
The Kanyashree Scheme aims to help girls, yet child marriage rates remain high.
