Siberian Anti-Plague Institute Draws Scrutiny After Employee’s Death

The Irkutsk institute was created long ago to help stop plague and other dangerous illnesses from spreading.

It now watches for several kinds of infections and helps health workers respond to outbreaks.

A worker named Darya Shipilova became very ill with pneumonia and died.

Some reports said a test tube with plague germs may have broken, while others suggested travel could be relevant.

Officials said tests found no germs connected to her work and no lab accident was recorded.

Many coworkers and other contacts were kept under observation as a precaution.

The World Health Organization said the risk to the wider public appeared low based on information available.

No official cause of death has been confirmed as plague.
