US Weighs Cuba-Related Military Preparations Amid Diplomatic Pressure
The US military is checking whether certain support teams could be ready for its Southern Command in the next few months.
These teams could include doctors, engineers, police, and people who move supplies.
This check does not mean that the teams will definitely go anywhere.
It also does not show that the United States has decided to attack Cuba.
The planning is happening while President Donald Trump is pressuring Cuba and talking about major changes there.
Trump said he believed a deal with Havana could be reached without using the military.
Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel said the United States was acting aggressively.
Earlier planning had considered other military options, but none of those plans led to an operation.
The US Army is assessing whether support units could be made available to Southern Command within 90 to 120 days.
Potential units include military police, medical, engineering, logistics, transportation, maintenance and supply personnel.
There is no indication that any units have been ordered to deploy or that Washington has authorized military action against Cuba.
The planning follows earlier reconnaissance operations, heightened readiness for some airpower units and reviews of possible military options.
President Donald Trump said he expected a deal with Havana, while Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel accused Washington of aggression and economic warfare.
