NRI Deposits Drop 29% in FY27
The amount of money that Indians living abroad (NRIs) are putting into special bank accounts in India has gone down by almost 30% in the first two months of the financial year 2027.
This means they deposited $1.33 billion in April and May 2026, compared to $1.88 billion in the same period last year.
There are different types of accounts for NRIs, like FCNR(B), NRE, and NRO.
The total money in these accounts is still very high, around $166 billion.
The drop is partly because fewer people are putting money into certain types of accounts.
However, new government policies have helped increase deposits in some accounts later in the year.
NRI deposit inflows dropped 29.25% to $1.33 billion in April-May FY27 from $1.88 billion in FY26.
Total outstanding NRI deposits stood at $165.96 billion as of May 2026.
FCNR(B) deposits fell to $282 million in April-May FY27, with outstanding amount rising to $34.04 billion in May.
NRE deposits recorded inflows of $597 million in April-May FY27, with outstanding deposits at $98.39 billion in May 2026.
NRO deposits saw inflows of $451 million in April-May 2026, with outstanding deposits at $33.53 billion in May 2026.
