How Matching Grants Could Expand Indian Higher Education Funding

How Matching Grants Could Expand Indian Higher Education Funding

A matching grant is a donation that depends on other people donating too.

One main donor promises to match money raised from additional supporters.

This means each rupee from a secondary donor can become two rupees for the project.

Rakesh Gangwal has offered to match up to Rs 300 crore for IIT Kanpur.

He previously gave Rs 100 crore to the institution in 2022.

If other donors contribute the full matching amount, the project could build a Rs 700 crore fund.

The money is intended for a hospital and a cancer-care research centre.

Matching grants can encourage more people and organisations to donate.
