Saint-Denis Mayor Steps Between Police and Student Protesters

Saint-Denis Mayor Steps Between Police and Student Protesters

Students in France have been protesting because they want better schools.

They are asking for more money, more teachers and improved classrooms.

On October 6, Saint-Denis Mayor Bally Bagayoko stood between some students and riot police.

He shouted for officers to stop as they moved toward the protesters.

Tear gas reached the mayor, and he later received saline treatment for irritation in his eyes.

Bagayoko said he was protecting students who lived in his city.

He also said many students had not acted aggressively and that the police response was too strong.

The protests have spread beyond the Paris region.

The government says it will review the students’ demands and make proposals by the end of October.
