Singapore Removes Pritam Singh as Opposition Leader
Pritam Singh, who was the Leader of the Opposition in Singapore, was removed from his position after being convicted of giving false testimony.
The decision was made by the parliament, where the ruling party has a majority.
Singh will still be a member of parliament and continue his other roles, but he will lose some benefits that come with being the Leader of the Opposition.
The prime minister said it was no longer appropriate for Singh to hold the position after his conviction.
Singh has said he did nothing wrong and acted in good faith.
The Workers’ Party, which Singh is a part of, was asked to suggest another member to take the role.
The decision was made after a long debate, with all Workers’ Party members voting against it.
The parliament also plans to look into the status of two other Workers’ Party lawmakers later.
Some people have criticized the government for using legal actions against political opponents, but the government denies these claims.
