US Immigrant Population Declines for First Time Since 1960s

For a long time, many people wanted to move to the United States to live, work, or study — this was called the American Dream.

But in 2025, fewer people are coming.

The number of immigrants living in America went down for the first time in over fifty years, from 53.3 million to 51.9 million.

This happened after President Donald Trump returned to the White House and made stricter rules about who can enter the country.

Fewer visas were given to students, workers, and families.

Many students from India and China, who used to study in America, are now choosing other places, like Europe, instead.

Indian tech workers are also returning home.

Even tourists are visiting less — four million fewer people came in 2025 than in 2024.

Some Americans worry because immigrants help the country's economy grow, while others think the stricter rules are a good thing.

The United States still has more immigrants living in it than any other country.
