Nimrat Kaur Recalls Father’s 1994 Kashmir Abduction and Killing

Nimrat Kaur’s father was an Indian Army officer named Major Bhupender Singh.

He was taken by men who allegedly pretended to be soldiers in Kashmir.

This happened in January 1994, when Nimrat was 11 years old.

The men held him for seven days and made demands about releasing other prisoners.

After seven days, Nimrat’s family learned that he had been killed.

Nimrat said she saw her father leave for work but next saw him in a coffin.

She said this left her and her family without a feeling of closure.

Her mother then raised Nimrat and her sister and rebuilt their lives.
