Vietnam Communist Party Congress Ends Early
The Vietnam Communist Party is having a big meeting to choose new leaders and decide important things for the country.
They planned to meet for several days, but they decided to finish early because everyone seems to agree on keeping the current leader, To Lam, in his job.
The voting for the new general secretary starts on Thursday, and the meeting will end on Friday instead of Sunday as originally planned.
Nearly 1,600 delegates elected 200 members of the party’s central committee, which will then choose the party chief and up to 17 to 19 members of the Politburo from a pre-arranged shortlist.
Vietnam Communist Party congress shortened to end Friday due to broad consensus.
Delegates begin voting on Thursday for the general secretary position.
Current leader To Lam is likely to be reappointed.
Congress was initially planned to last until Sunday.
Incumbent Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and President Luong Cuong were not among the newly elected committee members, making it unlikely that they will retain their leadership roles.
