India Aims Electric Air Taxi Test Flights by 2028
India has a big plan: it wants flying taxis!
These are electric airplanes that can take off straight up into the air, just like a helicopter.
The government minister said India hopes to fully test them next year and have them flying by 2028.
A company called Sarla Aviation is building one of these flying taxis in Bengaluru.
Their aircraft has seven electric motors and can carry six passengers plus a pilot.
Flying taxis could help people in busy cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi get around faster.
A trip from the airport to the city could take 20-30 minutes instead of up to two hours.
The flying taxis could also be used as air ambulances and to carry cargo.
The government has already approved the company's design, and many investors are supporting it.
Building the parts in India could help make the rides more affordable.
India aims to launch commercial electric air taxi services by 2028, with full testing expected to begin in 2026.
Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu announced the plan at Sarla Aviation's new headquarters in Bengaluru.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has granted Design Organisation Approval to Sarla Aviation for its eVTOL aircraft.
Sarla's powered-lift aircraft is designed to carry six passengers plus a pilot, using seven electric motors.
Air taxis could cut airport-to-city travel to 20-30 minutes and support air ambulance, medical evacuation and cargo services.
