Microfinance Disbursal Dips Amid Rising Defaults in Q4FY25
Imagine a lot of small loans are given out to people.
In the last part of the year, fewer of these loans were given out, about 25% less.
This happened because some people couldn't pay back their loans.
Also, the total amount of money lent decreased.
However, the average amount of money given out per loan increased.
This year was tough because of things like heatwaves, external influences and concerns about borrowers borrowing too much.
Even though things got a bit harder, new rules are helping to make sure that people can pay back their loans, so things are starting to improve.
Microfinance disbursals fell 25% year-on-year to ₹1.12-lakh crore in Q4FY25.
The number of loans disbursed dropped to 22 million accounts in Q4FY25 from 34 million in Q4FY24.
The industry's Gross Loan Portfolio (GLP) dropped 14% year-on-year to ₹3.75 lakh crore.
Portfolios at risk (PAR) >90 days deteriorated to 5.4% as of March 2025, up from 2.4% a year ago.
Average loan amount disbursed per account during FY25 rose 12.3% to ₹50,131.
