Violent Shillong KSU Rally Escalates Assam-Meghalaya Border Tensions

The Khasi Students’ Union held a black-flag motorcycle rally in Shillong to press the Meghalaya government to address five demands.

The rally became violent on Wednesday.

Police said vehicles were damaged, people were assaulted, and statues were vandalized.

Three senior KSU leaders were arrested and later sent to judicial custody for 14 days, according to one report.

KSU leaders denied being directly involved and said other people had entered the rally to damage their movement.

Assam-based taxi and commercial drivers then blocked roads leading into Meghalaya.

They said Assam vehicles and passengers had been attacked during the violence.

The drivers want an apology, compensation, and written promises that their vehicles and workers will be safe.

The protests have increased tensions between Assam and Meghalaya and threatened travel between the states.
