Mayor Mamdani Appoints Controversial Tenant Advocate
Mayor Zohran Mamdani appointed Cea Weaver, a well-known housing activist, to a important job in his office.
Cea has been a strong supporter of renters' rights and has helped pass laws to protect tenants.
However, some people are upset because of things she said on social media a long time ago.
She said things like homeownership is a tool of white supremacy and that it's important to make the white middle class poorer.
Some people, including the former mayor, think these comments are offensive and wrong.
But Mayor Mamdani says he knew about these old posts and still chose Cea because of her work helping renters.
Cea says she regrets those old comments but is still committed to making housing fair and affordable for everyone in New York.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani appointed Cea Weaver as Director of the Mayor’s Office to Protect Tenants on January 1, 2024.
Weaver is a longtime tenant advocate known for her role in passing tenant-friendly laws in New York.
Controversial past social media posts by Weaver, including calling homeownership a 'weapon of white supremacy,' have sparked criticism.
Mayor Mamdani stands by Weaver, stating she was vetted and appointed for her work in tenant protection.
Critics, including former Mayor Eric Adams and right-wing activists, have condemned Weaver's remarks as offensive and discriminatory.
