India defeat crowdfunded Wales in World Cup battle of disparity
A big sports event called the Hockey World Cup just started.
In one of the first games, India played against Wales.
India is a very strong team with lots of funding, so players could train together for almost a year.
Wales had to ask people for donations because going to the World Cup costs a lot of money.
India won the game with a score of 3 to 1.
Captain Harmanpreet Singh scored two goals, and Sanjay scored one.
Wales scored one goal near the end of the match.
This was the first game for both teams, and India earned three points from the win.
Next, India will play against England and then Pakistan.
Some Welsh players even help pay for their own travel, which shows how different the two teams' money situations were.
India defeated Wales 3-1 in their opening Pool D match at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen.
Captain Harmanpreet Singh scored twice and reserve drag-flicker Sanjay added a goal, while Wales pulled one back in the 56th minute.
Wales relied on a crowdfunding campaign to fund its World Cup trip, raising £38,071 (about Rs 49.26 lakh) but falling £1,929 short of its £40,000 target.
Welsh players contribute around £1,200 a year toward travel and accommodation, and Hockey Wales operates on a £100,000 annual budget deficit.
India, prepared through a nearly year-long fully funded national camp with government and sponsor backing, face England on August 17 and Pakistan on August 19 next.
