Taiwan Visitors Face Possible Arrest Under China Border Rules
China is preparing new rules for people entering and leaving the country.
The rules could affect people from Taiwan who visit China.
A person might be stopped from leaving if officials think they worked with sensitive technology.
They could also face problems if they work for a company China considers hostile.
Officials could investigate claims involving technology or military information.
Travel restrictions could last from six months to three years.
The rules may also affect engineers visiting China for semiconductor-related work.
Some companies are telling employees to bring special devices with no regular work or personal information.
China is preparing to enforce revised entry and exit rules in September, according to a Taiwanese report citing a national security source.
Taiwanese visitors could face detention or exit bans over alleged involvement in sensitive technology or work for a company deemed “hostile.”
The rules could restrict travel for six months to three years over activities considered threats to national security or interests.
Authorities may target alleged theft of technological, industrial, scientific, or military information and impose inspections on travelers’ devices.
Some companies reportedly require employees visiting China to use dedicated “clean” phones and laptops rather than routine work or personal devices.
