Indian Banks Report Strong Loan Growth in September Quarter
Several Indian banks said they lent more money in the September quarter than they had a year earlier.
Bank of India and Jammu & Kashmir Bank both reported strong growth in loans.
In many banks, loans grew faster than deposits, which are the funds customers keep in their accounts.
This made the share of deposits being lent out higher at some banks.
UCO Bank and Punjab National Bank both reported increases in that measure.
Jammu & Kashmir Bank’s CASA ratio, which tracks current and savings account deposits, went down.
Karnataka Bank and Dhanlaxmi Bank also reported strong loan growth.
These figures are provisional business updates from the banks.
Bank of India’s global advances rose 20.4% year-on-year to Rs 8.54 lakh crore, while deposits grew 21.6% to Rs 10.38 lakh crore.
Jammu & Kashmir Bank’s advances increased 23.7% to Rs 1.34 lakh crore, outpacing deposit growth of 16.3%; its CASA ratio fell to 42.01%.
Among banks reporting provisional figures, advances generally grew faster than deposits, raising credit-deposit ratios at several lenders.
UCO Bank’s advances rose 24.7% and its credit-deposit ratio increased to 82.37%; Punjab National Bank’s ratio rose to 75.56%.
Karnataka Bank reported 24.9% advances growth, while Dhanlaxmi Bank said gold and MSME loans helped drive its advances higher.
