Madras HC Judge Orders TN Officials
A judge in the Madras High Court, Justice G R Swaminathan, has ordered the Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary and the Additional Director General of Police to appear in court on December 17.
This is because some officials did not follow the judge's earlier order to light a special lamp at a temple during a festival.
The state government said they didn't follow the order because they were worried about safety and because they are challenging the order in the Supreme Court.
The judge said he would wait until the next hearing but not after that.
The case is about both the lighting of the lamp and the rights to the property where it happens.
The court also wants the Union Home Ministry to be part of the case and for the police to explain why they didn't follow the original order.
Justice G R Swaminathan ordered Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary and ADGP to appear via video conference on December 17.
The order follows non-implementation of his directive to light Karthigai Deepam at Thiruparankundram hill.
Government counsel sought adjournment, citing pending Supreme Court appeal and law-and-order concerns.
Judge rejected adjournment plea, stating the court would wait until the next hearing but not after that.
Union Home Ministry was impleaded as a respondent, and Madurai Deputy Police Commissioner was directed to file an explanation.
