Microsoft Brings AI to PCs as It Challenges Apple
Microsoft wants computers to do more AI work right on the device, instead of sending every task to a data center.
It showed a coding model that can run on powerful Windows computers.
Some versions of other AI models can also run locally, though they need machines with a lot of memory.
Microsoft says Copilot will still use the cloud for its most difficult tasks.
The company also introduced software rules meant to keep AI agents from seeing data or doing things they are not allowed to.
Microsoft announced a powerful new Surface laptop to run these kinds of workloads.
It costs at least $2,599.
One analyst said higher computer prices could make local AI too expensive for many people.
Microsoft unveiled an AI coding model that can run locally on PCs and security tools designed to restrict AI agents’ access.
The company says Windows users can run some AI models on their computers, while Copilot will still rely on the cloud for the hardest tasks.
Microsoft announced a Surface Laptop Ultra powered by Nvidia chips, with prices ranging from $2,599 to $5,899.
Microsoft said Anthropic, OpenAI and Nvidia will use its new Execution Containers, which are intended to prevent agents from taking unauthorized actions.
Analyst Anshel Sag said rising hardware costs could make local AI practical mainly for people and organizations with larger budgets.

Running AI locally
Microsoft and Nvidia
Microsoft is promoting local models as an option when cost or privacy matters, and says its security tools can help agents operate within set rules.
Cost concerns
Analyst Anshel Sag said the hardware is now so expensive that only people with sufficient budgets may be able to afford local AI.
Security tools for AI agents
Microsoft and Nvidia
Microsoft says Execution Containers can prevent agents from accessing data or carrying out unauthorized tasks; Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang called the technology important to deploying agents.
Cost concerns
The article describes security risks from increasingly autonomous agents and notes that Nvidia is seeking to avoid a repeat of the Hugging Face hack; it does not include a direct response challenging Microsoft’s claims.
