Telangana Assembly Row Deepens Over Remarks, Police Action
The Telangana Assembly argued about two connected issues.
One involved comments that were allegedly insulting to the Speaker’s mother.
The Speaker said he had the right to be angry because the comments concerned his family.
Two BRS lawmakers were arrested over the alleged remarks.
The other issue involved claims that police treated BRS women lawmakers roughly outside the Assembly.
BRS said women lawmakers were mistreated and cases were filed against them.
Government members said the incident needed investigation and accused BRS of contributing to the confrontation.
The Assembly was temporarily stopped while the argument continued.
The Telangana Assembly was disrupted for a second day over alleged derogatory remarks by BRS MLC Thatha Madhusudan about Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar’s mother.
Madhusudan and fellow BRS MLC N Naveen Kumar Reddy were arrested under sections of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
BRS leader T Harish Rao alleged police manhandled women BRS MLAs and registered cases against them instead of addressing their complaint.
The government said it had sought a report on the police conduct, while Minister D Anasuya Seethakka accused BRS of placing women legislators at the front of Monday’s confrontation.
The Speaker adjourned the House for 15 minutes as Congress legislators demanded an apology and the dispute continued.
