Ladakh Talks Stall as Groups Demand Empowered Elected Government

Ladakh’s main representative groups met government officials to discuss how the region should be governed.

The meeting in Leh did not produce an agreement.

The groups want Ladakh to have an elected assembly with real law-making, administrative and financial powers.

They also want stronger protections for Ladakh’s culture, environment and population balance.

They are asking for more control over policing and for Ladakh-specific public services.

The government officials tried to discuss development issues, but the groups wanted to focus on promises recorded at an earlier May 22 meeting.

The groups say they may restart protests if the promises are delayed or weakened.

Another meeting is planned in New Delhi in September.
