India Weighs Annual Drug Testing for All Pilots After Incident

An Air India plane flying from Phuket to New Delhi suddenly dropped about 300 feet.

Twenty passengers and four cabin crew members were injured, and the plane landed safely.

The captain’s drug test first suggested marijuana use, so he was taken off flying duty.

A second test and medical review are part of the rules for confirming such results.

Investigators have not said that the drug result caused the plane to drop.

They are also checking possible problems with the plane’s hydraulic and flight-control systems.

India currently tests 10% of pilots for drugs each year.

The government is considering testing every pilot once a year at a random time, but it is also studying the effect on airline operations.
