UP Farmer Doubles Sugarcane Yield with Innovative Methods
Achal Mishra is a farmer from Uttar Pradesh who has found a clever way to grow more sugarcane.
Instead of using the old methods, he tried a new way called the trench pit method and planted different kinds of seeds that work well in his local weather.
This helped him grow more sugarcane, from 300 quintals to 550-600 quintals per acre.
He also planted other crops like mustard, potato, garlic, and marigold in between the sugarcane, which not only helped the sugarcane grow better but also gave him extra income.
For his smart farming, he received awards from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research and has inspired other farmers in his area.
He even started a group to sell his organic products like jaggery and special rice.
Achal Mishra, a 40-year-old farmer from Medaipurva, Gola tehsil, Lakhimpur Kheri, UP, doubled his sugarcane yield using the trench pit method and new seed varieties.
His yield increased from 300 quintals per acre to 550-600 quintals per acre.
Mishra also practiced intercropping, growing mustard, potato, garlic, and marigold alongside sugarcane, which supplemented micronutrients and added to his income.
He received the 'Innovative Farmer' certificate from ICAR and the 'Millenium Farmer' award for his contributions to cane farming.
Mishra set up a Farmer Producer Organisation (FPO) for the sale of organic products processed from his crops, including jaggery and kala namak rice.
