India Opens Deep-Sea Fishing With New Scientific Safeguards

India Opens Deep-Sea Fishing With New Scientific Safeguards

India wants its fishing industry to catch more fish in deep water and on the high seas.

The government says these areas contain valuable species such as tuna, deep-sea shrimp, eels and squid.

Indian fishing vessels can now apply online and for free to access India’s Exclusive Economic Zone.

A new authorisation system also supports fishing beyond the EEZ in international waters.

Fish caught by Indian vessels in the EEZ or on the high seas will not face import duty when brought back to India.

The government says this could create jobs, increase seafood exports and reduce pressure on coastal fishing areas.

Scientists warn that deep-sea ecosystems are important and need protection.

They will use advanced technologies to study the ocean and guide fishing decisions.

The goal is to grow India’s blue economy while trying to keep marine resources sustainable.
