Kerala Cleric’s Remarks on Women Draw Cross-Party Backlash

Kerala Cleric’s Remarks on Women Draw Cross-Party Backlash

Kerala cleric Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad said women should stay inside their homes.

He compared women to valuable gold ornaments that should be kept in a box.

He said women appearing in public could cause great destruction.

He said this view was based on the Holy Quran and was meant to protect women’s honour and dignity.

Several political leaders strongly disagreed with him.

They said women should be free to study, work, lead and participate in public life.

They also said India’s Constitution promises equality and freedom to women.

The comments have led to a wider debate about religion, women’s rights and public life in Kerala.
