Agoda Report: Governance, Not Adoption, to Define AI Maturity in Southeast Asia & India
Imagine you have a super-smart helper that can write computer code for you, like a magic pen!
Lots of computer programmers in places like India and Southeast Asia are using these helpers, called AI tools, almost every day.
They use them mostly to help write the code itself.
However, these AI helpers sometimes make mistakes or write code that needs a lot of fixing, as most programmers find they have to change the AI's work a lot before it's ready.
Also, not many companies have clear rules for how their programmers should use these AI helpers.
The report says that just using AI isn't enough; companies need to create good rules and systems, like a special manager, to make sure the AI is used safely and correctly.
This careful management, called governance, will be the next big step for AI to become really useful and trustworthy in this region.
95% of developers in Southeast Asia and India use AI tools weekly, primarily for code generation.
Integration of AI for tasks beyond code generation, such as documentation and testing, shows lower adoption rates.
A significant majority of organizations (60%) lack a formal AI policy, leaving developers to self-govern AI use.
Most AI-generated code requires substantial revisions, indicating a need for improved reliability and quality control.
The next phase of AI maturity in the region will be determined by strong governance frameworks, not just adoption rates.
