Meta Served AI Nudify Ads via Chinese Partner
Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, has been running ads for AI apps that can create fake nude images or videos of people without their consent.
These ads were placed by a Chinese company called GatherOne, which is one of Meta's advertising partners.
Even though Meta has rules against such ads, thousands of them were shown to users.
A group called the Tech Transparency Project found these ads and said Meta isn't doing enough to stop them.
Meta says it is trying to stop these ads, but the ads were still shown to users.
Some of these apps have been downloaded millions of times, and many teens have used them to create or share inappropriate images.
Laws like the Take It Down Act are trying to stop this, but it's still a big problem.
Meta served 7,600 ads for AI nudify apps via Chinese partner GatherOne, violating its own policies.
The ads promoted apps that can create non-consensual intimate imagery, including child pornography.
Meta's rules prohibit sexually suggestive ads or those for apps that purport to strip the persons depicted.
GatherOne maintains compliance with Meta's policies and international legal frameworks.
Meta generated $18.4 billion in revenue from China in 2024, 11% of its global revenue.
