Sahara-Adani Property Sale: Supreme Court Grants Govt More Time
The Supreme Court is delaying a decision on whether Sahara can sell many of its properties to a company called Adani.
Sahara wants to sell these properties, which include famous places like Aamby Valley and Hotel Sahara Star, to raise money to pay back people they owe money to, especially investors.
The government asked for more time to think about Sahara's request because they need to consider the involvement of many cooperative groups that have connections with Sahara.
A helper for the court, called an amicus curiae, also told the judges that Sahara has properties that people are claiming, which Sahara hasn't listed.
The court is also looking at a long-standing case about Sahara needing to repay over ₹24,000 crore from more than a decade ago.
So far, Sahara has paid back about ₹16,000 crore, but there's still a significant amount left.
The Supreme Court granted the Union government more time to respond to Sahara's plea to sell 88 properties to Adani Properties.
The hearing was adjourned for six weeks on Monday.
The government also requested to be made a party to the case due to the involvement of cooperative societies and depositors.
The amicus curiae continues to receive claims over undisclosed Sahara properties and suggested publishing an asset list.
The sale is part of Sahara's efforts to repay over ₹24,000 crore raised through illegal debentures, with approximately ₹9,000 crore still outstanding.
