Ladakh Rock Check Dams Show Promise for Water Security

Ladakh built five small dams from rocks found in nearby riverbeds.

The dams were designed to help keep more water available for farms.

They were built without cement, concrete or steel.

During summer, the river became much stronger and carried more than 200 cusecs of water.

Four dams mostly stayed strong during these heavy flows.

One dam near Upshi developed a small break, which engineers are repairing.

Sand collected behind the dams and may have helped make them more stable.

Officials will use what they learned to improve similar projects in the future.
