Senator Demands Probe into Shein, Temu for IP Theft
A senator named Tom Cotton from Arkansas wrote a letter asking the U.S. government to investigate two online shopping websites, Shein and Temu.
These websites sell cheap clothes and accessories, but the senator thinks they might be stealing ideas from other brands and selling fake products.
The letter was sent to someone named Pam Bondi, who is in charge of legal matters.
Shein and Temu mostly send their products from China.
Shein says they check their suppliers to make sure they are not stealing ideas, but Temu did not say anything right away.
The senator is also worried because a special rule that let these websites send products to the U.S. without paying taxes has ended.
Now, the senator wants the government to look closely at these websites because their products are stored in the U.S. and are under U.S. laws.
Senator Tom Cotton called for a federal probe into Shein and Temu for intellectual property theft and counterfeiting.
The letter was sent to Attorney General Pam Bondi, requesting the Justice and Homeland Security departments to investigate.
Shein and Temu have faced increased scrutiny following the end of a U.S. trade exemption that allowed duty-free shipments under $800.
Shein claims to require suppliers to certify no IP infringement and has a team to ensure compliance.
Temu did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
