Emperor Akihito's Enthronement and Ellis Island Closure on This Day in History

Imagine two big events happened on the same day, but in different years and places.

In Japan, on November 12, 1990, a new emperor named Akihito officially became the emperor.

This started a new time called the Heisei era, which means 'achieving peace.'

He promised to follow the country's rules and hoped for a peaceful time for everyone.

Lots of people celebrated this special day in Japan.

Meanwhile, on November 12, 1954, a very important place in America called Ellis Island closed down.

For over 60 years, millions of people who came to America looking for a new life arrived through Ellis Island.

It was like a big welcoming door.

But as time went on, fewer people came through it, and they started arriving by airplanes instead.

So, it was no longer needed and shut its doors for good.
