India Makes Vande Mataram Recitation Mandatory Before Anthem
India has passed a new law that says everyone must sing the whole song Vande Mataram before the national anthem at official events.
If someone refuses or sings it badly, they could be jailed for up to three years and fined.
People who break the rule again might have to stay in a government building for at least a year.
The law also says the entire original song by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee must be sung, not a shortened version.
The Supreme Court had earlier said people can't be forced to sing the national anthem, but this new rule is about Vande Mataram.
Indian government mandates singing full Vande Mataram before Jana Gana Mana at public events.
The law imposes up to three years imprisonment and fines for intentional disrespect.
Repeat offenders face a minimum one-year stay in government accommodation.
The full composition by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee must be sung; abbreviated version banned.
Supreme Court previously ruled citizens cannot be compelled to sing the national anthem.
