BJP MP Proposes Bill to Remove 'Secular' and 'Socialist' from Preamble
A member of the Indian Parliament from the BJP party, named Bhim Singh, has introduced a bill to remove the words 'secular' and 'socialist' from the beginning part of the Indian Constitution, called the Preamble.
He says these words were added in 1976 during a time when the country was under Emergency rule, and he thinks they were added in a way that wasn't fair or democratic.
He also says that the original Constitution didn't have these words and that they cause confusion.
He believes the words were added to please certain groups and that they aren't necessary.
The chairman of the committee that wrote the original Constitution, Dr B R Ambedkar, had said that the Constitution already makes the country secular without needing to say it, and that future generations should be free to choose their own economic policies.
