India’s Cyber Fraud Cases Triple, Telangana Leads 2024
India has seen a big jump in cyber fraud, going from about 10,000 cases in 2020 to almost 30,000 in 2024.
The state of Telangana had the most, with almost 19,000 cases.
The biggest type of fraud was online banking, followed by credit and debit card fraud.
The government’s crime bureau, the NCRB, doesn’t keep track of how much money was lost.
To fight this, the government set up a cyber crime centre and a reporting system that has already saved more than 11,000 crore rupees from complaints.
Cyber fraud cases in India rose from 10,395 in 2020 to 29,758 in 2024, nearly tripling.
Telangana recorded the highest number of cases in 2024 with 18,922, followed by Bihar (4,020) and Maharashtra (2,827).
Online banking fraud was the most common type in 2024, accounting for 4,659 cases, followed by credit/debit card fraud (3,829).
The National Crime Records Bureau does not track the amount of money lost or recovered in cyber fraud cases.
The government has established the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre and a reporting system that has saved over Rs 11,158 crore from 32.8 lakh complaints as of June 30, 2024.
