India Aims to Scale Solar PV Cell Manufacturing
India wants to make more solar cells, the building blocks of solar panels, right here in the country.
Right now, India can make enough panels to create about 27 GW.
The government wants to boost this to 42 GW by early 2027.
To help, the government will soon release a list of approved cell makers, which will be required for projects.
By mid-2026, all projects will need to use Indian-made solar cells.
India aims to increase solar PV cell manufacturing capacity to 42 GW by Q1 FY27.
The government plans to publish the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) for cells by August 2025.
Mandatory sourcing from the ALMM for solar PV cells will begin around September 1, 2025, for all announced bids.
All government and private projects must use domestically manufactured cells from June 1, 2026.
India's current solar PV module manufacturing capacity is about 92 GW.
