Syria Introduces New Banknotes Without Assad Portraits
Syria has a new set of money called banknotes.
These new notes don't have pictures of the old leaders, the Assad family, but instead show pretty plants and crops like roses and wheat.
This change happened because the old leaders are no longer in charge.
The new money is also worth more because they took away two zeros.
For example, 100 old Syrian pounds are now equal to 1 new pound.
This change is part of a bigger plan to help the country's money be stronger and more trusted.
The old and new money can be used together for a while to help people get used to the new notes.
However, the leaders say that just changing the money isn't enough to fix the economy.
They need to do more things to help the country, like making more products and creating jobs.
The old money lost almost all its value because of the war and other problems, so this new money is a step to make things better.
Syria introduced new banknotes on January 1, 2026, replacing Assad-era currency with nature symbols.
The new notes feature agricultural symbols like roses, wheat, olives, oranges, and mulberries.
The currency has been redenominated, with 100 old Syrian pounds equaling 1 new pound.
A 90-day transition period allows both old and new notes to be used.
Officials emphasize that broader economic reforms are needed to stabilize the currency and economy.
