Satheesan’s Women’s Remarks Unite Kerala’s Rival Muslim Bodies
A senior Muslim cleric in Kerala said women should not mix with men in public during some religious activities.
V D Satheesan criticised this view and said women should participate fully in society.
He also said the Quran was being interpreted incorrectly.
Several Muslim organisations disagreed with Satheesan and defended the cleric.
Some said religious leaders, rather than politicians, should explain religious matters.
Rival Sunni groups that usually disagree therefore came together on this issue.
The Indian Union Muslim League also said the cleric may have been thinking about women’s safety.
However, some Muslims, including women, criticised the cleric.
The debate shows that Muslim women’s public and political participation is continuing to expand in Kerala.
Kanthapuram A P Abubacker Musliyar warned against women mingling with men in public places during Islamic celebrations.
V D Satheesan called the cleric’s position unsuitable for a progressive Kerala and accused him of misinterpreting the Quran.
The Keralam Muslim Jamaath, SAMASTHA and the IUML defended or supported Kanthapuram’s position.
The controversy temporarily united rival Sunni organisations that are usually divided politically, organisationally and ideologically.
Muslim women and reformist voices also criticised Kanthapuram, while women’s participation in Kerala’s public and political life continues to grow.
