Bhiwandi Building Collapse Claims Nine Lives
A building in the town of Bhiwandi, near Mumbai, fell down on a Thursday night.
Nine people died and three others might still be trapped.
Bhiwandi has had many building crashes in the last ten years, like in 2016, 2020, and 2023.
The 2020 crash was the worst, killing 41 people.
Because of these crashes, the Bombay High Court started looking at unsafe buildings in the state.
The chief minister gave money to families who lost loved ones in the 2023 crash.
The town’s buildings were already known to be unsafe, but people kept living there.
The new crash shows that more safety checks are needed.
A four‑storey building in Bhiwandi collapsed Thursday night, killing nine and leaving three missing.
The incident follows a decade of fatal building failures in the powerloom town, including 2016, 2020, and 2023 collapses.
The 2023 Wardhaman Compound collapse killed eight, prompting Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to offer Rs 5 lakh compensation and free treatment for the injured.
The 2020 Jilani Building collapse was the deadliest, killing 41 people and leading the Bombay High Court to take suo motu cognisance of unsafe structures in Maharashtra.
Municipal authorities had previously declared many of Bhiwandi’s buildings unsafe, yet residents continued to live in them.
