Top Banks Earn Over Rs 20,000 Crore from Insurance Sales in FY26
In the fiscal year 2026, India's top banks made over ₹20,000 crore by selling insurance policies.
Most of this money came from private banks.
HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank were among the top earners.
These banks make a lot of money from insurance because they have many branches and customers.
However, regulators are worried about this and are making new rules to protect customers from being sold the wrong insurance policies.
They want banks to focus more on lending and deposits instead of selling insurance.
The rules will also make it harder for banks to earn as much from insurance sales.
India's top banks earned over ₹20,000 crore from insurance sales in FY26.
Private banks contributed nearly 80% of this income, with HDFC Bank earning ₹5,688 crore from life insurance and ₹1,239 crore from health and general insurance.
ICICI Bank earned ₹2,882 crore from life insurance and ₹1,186 crore from health and general insurance.
Axis Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank reported ₹3,700 crore and ₹1,075 crore, respectively, in insurance distribution commission.
Regulators are tightening rules to curb mis-selling and reduce dependence on bank-led insurance distribution.
