Senate Democrats Challenge FBI Director Kash Patel Over Leadership
Kash Patel, the FBI director, answered questions from senators about how he runs the agency.
The hearing lasted more than four hours.
Democratic senators said the FBI had treated some journalists unfairly.
They also questioned why some FBI employees left or were dismissed.
Patel said there had been no purge and that many employees retired voluntarily.
Senators also disagreed about new FBI hiring rules.
The rules no longer automatically reject some applicants for certain past conduct.
Patel said the change could help people who had been victims of trafficking or abuse.
Kash Patel faced more than four hours of questioning from Senate Democrats about his leadership of the FBI.
Democrats accused the FBI of intimidating journalists who reported critically on Patel and President Donald Trump.
Patel called the allegations a “total lie” and denied using FBI resources to target reporters.
Senators disputed whether FBI departures represented a purge of officials involved in investigations concerning Trump.
Democrats criticized revised hiring rules, while Patel said they protected trafficking and abuse victims from automatic exclusion.
