Why Indian hockey stopped winning: 1975 glory and AstroTurf decline
In 1975, the Indian hockey team won the World Cup for the first and only time by beating Pakistan 2-1.
Before the tournament, the hockey federation was in big trouble, so the leader of Punjab, Giani Zail Singh, paid for the team's training camp.
Not long after, hockey fields changed from grass to fake grass called AstroTurf.
AstroTurf is very fast and makes strong, speedy players the best, instead of players with clever stick skills like India's.
India could not afford to build many AstroTurf fields, while richer countries could, so India started losing.
Money also went to cricket, which made things worse.
In 2008, India did not even qualify for the Olympics for the first time ever.
Years later, the state of Odisha gave lots of money to hockey, more than 400 crore rupees.
India won a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, its first in 41 years.
Now India hopes to win the World Cup again in 2026.
India won its only men's Hockey World Cup title on March 15, 1975, beating Pakistan 2-1 in the final in Kuala Lumpur after goals from Surjit Singh and Ashok Kumar.
With the Indian Hockey Federation in disarray months before the 1975 World Cup, Punjab Chief Minister Giani Zail Singh funded and ran the national camp at Panjab University in Chandigarh.
Hockey switched to synthetic turf (AstroTurf) at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, favoring pace and physical strength over the dribbling skills that had been India's traditional strength.
India hit a low point in 2008 when it failed to qualify for the Beijing Olympics for the first time in its history, then won men's bronze at Tokyo 2021, its first podium in 41 years.
The Odisha government under Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has committed 434.12 crore rupees to Hockey India via the Odisha Mining Corporation through 2033 (extended to 2036), and India enters the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup still chasing its first title since 1975.
